Spring is a useful time to check how your roof and drainage handled winter. Start with observations you can make safely from the ground, then arrange professional inspection where you notice a change. A seasonal check can help prioritize repairs; it cannot guarantee that every concealed problem will be found.
Look for changes after winter
Photograph missing or displaced shingles, hanging gutter sections, fallen branches and visible damage around roof edges. Inside, note new ceiling stains or damp areas and when they appear. Compare with previous photographs if available. Do not climb onto the roof or enter an unsafe attic to investigate.
Check gutters and downspouts
Watch for overflow, separated joints and water discharging where it can affect the house or a walkway. Ask a suitably equipped professional to clear debris and inspect elevated components. Cleaning frequency depends on nearby trees, debris accumulation and the system’s condition; a fixed calendar alone may not be enough.

Address branches and moisture carefully
Branches rubbing against the roof can damage its surface. Have an appropriate tree-care professional assess large limbs, unstable trees or branches near utility lines. Do not remove a tree resting on the house yourself.

Turn observations into a maintenance plan
